The Importance of a Quality Dog Food

Feeding your bulldog a high-quality, age-appropriate diet will benefit your furry friend for years. It will improve their overall health and increase their quality of life. A quality diet can boost immune health, help with weight control, and be less stressful on internal organs.

The kidneys and liver filter out chemicals, dyes, preservatives, and non-nutritive fillers often found in low-quality dog foods. Over the years, this wear and tear on organs can contribute to poor health.

Over 50% of America’s dogs are overweight or obese. An animal with a weight problem has an increased risk of diabetes, arthritis, and some cancers. Quality dog food from trusted brands will benefit your dog for years.

Just as important as quality dog food is age-appropriate food. As puppies mature into adults and seniors, their nutrition needs change. Puppies have higher calorie and protein needs because it’s a period of such rapid growth. Vets recommend feeding a growth formula until the dog has reached 90% of their adult size. Also, growth formulas are appropriate for pregnant and nursing mothers.

For adult dogs, the metabolism has slowed as the growth period is over. Spayed or neutered dogs will also have a decreased metabolism. Choosing an appropriate food for your dog’s overall health and activity level is essential to optimize nutrition and health.

Once a dog has moved into the senior years (+7), weight loss and weight gain can be a problem. Arthritis, thyroidism, and dental pain can interfere with eating. Some older dogs will have trouble digesting protein and fat, leading to excess gas, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Activity changes with a slower metabolism can cause excess weight gain. A healthy diet, moderate exercise, and limiting treats can help offset this.

Check out our recommendations for the best dog food at every stage of your bulldog’s life. We love these choices for natural, wholesome ingredients without artificial fillers.
